A Good Prawn Mee @ Spicy Shack Prawn Mee Assam Laksa

Whenever I crave a good bowl of Penang Prawn Mee, or as it’s called there, Hokkien Mee, I always head to Spicy Shack Prawn Mee & Assam Laksa, located in Taman Gembira. This cozy spot is a small stall with only 4–5 tables. The environment can feel a bit stuffy due to the limited space and the gas stoves with blazing hot flames constantly warming the broths. Most customers come here for a quick meal before heading off to their daily routines. It gets especially warm during the afternoons.

The main attractions here are three dishes:

Prawn Mee
Assam Laksa
Chee Cheong Fun with Shrimp Paste, a specialty often found in Penang.
During my visit today, we ordered one large Prawn Mee, one small Prawn Mee, four mushroom meatballs, and a drink. The total bill came to RM28.40 for all the items.

Penang Hokkien Mee
Prawn Mee
Spicy Shack Taman Continental

When it comes to taste, I would rank the Prawn Mee here as one of the best in Klang Valley. While it may not surpass the top 1 or 2 stalls on Penang Island, it certainly gives them a good challenge. For me, the hallmark of a great Prawn Mee is its broth. I prefer a slightly thick broth with natural sweetness derived from prawn shells rather than sugar. Some broths I’ve tried elsewhere have a bitter taste, likely from being overcooked.

The ingredients and shrimps here are just sufficient—although I wouldn’t mind a bit more! All in all, this is a hidden gem worth trying if you’re craving a hot and satisfying bowl of Prawn Mee. Best of all, it’s conveniently located in Kuala Lumpur.
