4am Roasted Duck by Grandma @ Pasar Pudu

During the midnight, I suddenly felt hungry after watching a video about a 71-year-old grandma who has been selling roasted duck at Pudu Pasar at 4am for the past 40 years. Since I work as a Facebook marketer handling various types of advertisements, I decided to give this special roasted duck a try. I got in my car, checked Waze, and found that it would take me just 14 minutes to get there.

Driving at midnight in KL was a pleasure—less traffic and the perfect time for supper, which fits perfectly with the theme of my KL Supper Foodie blog. When I arrived, the Pudu market was bustling with merchants setting up for the morning market.

It took me a while to locate the grandma’s stall since I wasn’t familiar with the place, but I eventually found it.

She was selling her roasted ducks for RM62 for a whole duck and RM31 for half, which I thought was quite reasonable.

The grandma packed the duck neatly in old newspaper, and I decided to explore the pasar pagi nearby. I stumbled upon a live mud crab seller and, out of curiosity, asked about the price—RM48 per kilogram, which included about three live crabs.

However, I didn’t buy the crabs as you’d need to “humanely” handle them yourself, which I wasn’t prepared for. Instead, I bought half a kilo of prawns for RM20.

When I got home, the Japanese rice I had prepared earlier was ready, and my secret weapon was adding butter to make it even tastier.

I also cooked the prawns with scallop sauce and Ajinomoto as my seasoning—just like Uncle Roger, I love MSG!

The roasted duck was incredible, especially when paired with the special sauce and chili—it was absolutely delicious.

The flavor could easily rival the chef’s roasted duck from Guangzhou that I had at my ex-company near Imazium. Moreover, I feel grateful to have such a wonderful meal on my table, especially on the last day of 2024, rather than having nothing to eat.

Overall, I’d definitely buy from this grandma again. It’s clear how much hardship she’s endured working at her age, and it made me reflect—I might find myself in a similar situation someday.
